About Us
The Minority Association of Pre-Health Students is a program sponsored by the Student National Medical Association, the oldest and largest medical student organization dedicated to underrepresented or
underprivileged pre-health students and fostering culturally conscious physicians by increasing awareness of
issues that underrepresented communities face. MAPS aims to serve the health needs of underrepresented
communities, to educate members, the campus community, and when possible, the surrounding community
about the importance of health matters, to ensure cultural sensitivity to the needs of a diverse population, and to
assist students in preparing to matriculate into their chosen medical or health associated professional school. As a student group, MAPS serves as a pipeline and mentorship program to improve minority student matriculation
into all professional health related programs, with an emphasis on medicine. MAPS works in partnership with the UCI School of Medicine SNMA chapter in providing a comprehensive student support program which
includes academic advisement, tutoring, mentoring, personal development workshops, career placement, community service and volunteer opportunities. While our primary focus is preparation for medical school, participation in our professional development programs and community service such mock interviews and health fairs can be equally beneficial to all.
Our Purpose
We are a student-led, nonprofit organization at UC Irvine that works to provide underrepresented students, interested in healthcare fields, with knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary for successful matriculation into health related professions. MAPS endeavors to also educate its members and the campus community, and when possible, the surrounding community on issues and structural conditions that influence the medical field and health care of minority communities.
